I was struck by the cruelty of his lordship.
The Weird – The Hell Screen – Ryunosuke Akutagawa
Seven months after Akutagawa’s birth, his mother went insane and he was adopted by her older brother, taking the Akutagawa family name.
The apprentice told me that an uncanny feeling over came him at that point — his eyes seemed to make out vague, misshapen shadows that slid over the surface of the screen and flooded down upon the two of them. One time, it is said, His Lordship was returning from a plum-blossom banquet at the Palace when the ox pulling his carriage got loose and injured an old man who happened to be passing by. Hell Screen is much longer, and tells the story of an obsessive artist, attempting to paint a realistic portrayal of Hell, descending into madness as he akuyagawa to gain real-world inspiration for his work.

Sometimes, the pillaging of reality is unconscious. And with the chain cutting off the circulation of his blood, you know, his skin swelled red — face, torso, everywhere. I therefore gave up trying to resist and allowed myself to be pulled several paces farther. A morality play cloaked in traditional Japanese Buddhism, it’s an extremely effective story that portrays an uncompromisi Hell Screen and A Spider’s Thread were my second readings of Akutagawa after In a Grove.
Both of these little stories feature ‘Hell’ and both feature characters who are arrogant or selfish. This was by no means Yoshihide at his worst, however. And not only in the Horikawa mansion. I looked down to find the monkey Yoshihide prostrating himself at my feet, hands on the floor like a human being, bowing over and over in thanks, his golden bell ringing. Well, then, having been singled out for praise this way, Yoshihideis daughter withdrew from His Lordship’s presence, but she knew how to avoid provoking the envy of the household’s other, less modest, ladies-inwaiting.
Could this actually scresn the daughter of Yoshihide? For it did seem that Yoshihidejs sole purpose in calling the apprentice to his studio that night had been to set the owl on him and draw him trying to escape.
Therefore, in the process of rendering a vision of ecreen, he deliberately subjects his apprentices to forms of torture—chaining them up and setting predatory, deadly animals on them—to sketch them as they suffer.
He hints at the outcome right before providing backstory, and seemingly innocuous or irrelevant details eventually contribute to the devastating climax.

Instantly the bird emitted a shriek and leaped from the table top, aiming its outstretched talons at the apprentice’s face. Akutagawa married Tsukamoto Fumiko in and the following year left his post as English instructor at the naval academy in Yokosuka, becoming an employee of the Mainichi Shinbun.
He’s not just going to pass out the answers like a litter of kittens or anything. So, this is what you get when you browse through a friend’s goodreads list and say: In other projects Wikipedia.
It turns out that Akutagawa studied Poe, which may have influenced parts of the story. His Imperial Majesty himself once presented His Lordship with thirty pure white horses on akuragawa occasion of a New Year’s banquet.

Where the akhtagawa turned a corner, the pale surface of His Lordship’s pond could be seen stretching off through the darkness beyond a gently drooping pine. In that same instant Yoshihide himself cried out and jumped to his feet, whereupon the beating of the owl’s wings grew faster and louder and there came the clatter of something falling over and a tearing sound. All this only reinforced the rumor that His Lordship was enamored of the girl.
Mar 18, Aldrin rated it really liked it. With horror, it’s even more interesting as one culture’s horror is another culture’s everyday thing.
The story climaxes when Yoshihide asks the lord to burn a beautiful lady in a carriage so he can finish the screen. Nonetheless, when Yoshihide akutagaaw that she be released and returned to his household, the Lord reacts with anger.
Some have questioned the wisdom of His Lordship’s undertaking such a project, comparing him to China’s First Emperor, whose subjects were forced to build the Great Wall, or to the Sui emperor Yang, who made his people erect lofty palaces; but such critics might be likened to the proverbial blind men who described the elephant according only to the parts they could feel. I learn only much later, through other people, that a character and his situation correspond exactly to someone I must have heard about at some point, but had forgotten about.
The Masks and Hoods of Lovers. E’ una testimonianza di quanto questo scrittore non rappresenti solo una delle vette della letteratura giapponese moderna, ma non sfiguri di fianco ad esimi colleghi occidentali come Lovecraft e Poe. The snake raised its head and began to coil upward around its own body, but it could not reach Yoshihide’s hand.
Come along to hell! The little stone marker is probably so cloaked in moss now, after decades of exposure to the wind and rain, that no one can tell whose hell it is anymore. For sheer horror, though, none of them measures up to the story of the screen depicting scenes of hell which is now a prized family heirloom.
