The only weak point of the book for this reader being that, once in a while, one gets a kind of “macro” perspective with more than a nod to works by people like Simon Frith and Richard Middleton, with their banal smell of “Academia”. Of course, music remains close at hand; Bruford may not be performing any longer, but he continues to manage his own significant discography via his Winterfold and Summerfold labels, in addition to speaking engagements and other music-related activities that have ramped up significantly and, perhaps, not surprisinglyin the two years since The Autobiography ‘s initial publication.
Another good feature of the autobiography is that it is not chronological but instead arranged around selected topics from theory, business, and sociology of music, which of course helps the author focus on the serious aspects of his career.

There is rhythm, too, in the cut-and-paste feel of the book’s meandering and jumping observations. Thoroughly enjoyable, though probably only for music enthusiasts.
While I rarely revisit books of this sort, I have often found myself going back and hunting for the plentiful nuggets of humor and wisdom within. The book rises above your mama’s average biography by being well-written and hardly ghostwrittenand also by the amount of insight it sheds on the psychology and sociology of a world class drummer struggling to come to terms with self-identity and the notion of “leaving something behind” in an age of fierce global competition.
