executjon This is the first book I have read by Val McDermid. He said that he thought rereading books was very helpful in really understanding the story. This standalone book is densely plotted and moves right along, but the reader needs to take the time to keep track of the many and various village and police department members. I consider it one of my top five favorite crime novels along with Peter Robinson’s “In a Dry Season”. Placee enjoyed the way Val McDermid developed the characters in such a way that they seem like real people.

However, when it came to the terrible killings by Ian Brady and Myra Hindley this policeman, who had been involved in the original murder investigation, said it had cast a shadow over his life. The main characters were well-developed and engaging, but we spent an excessive amount of time with each of them and their thoughts.
I had initially read it last year and thought it was one of the best books I had ever come across. Author McDermid takes this true life case and weaves her story into such a compelling tale of unanswered questions, piles of red herrings and an ending that will honestly knock the air out of even a seasoned mystery-lover. The author had an uncanny ability to describe non-dramatic scenes at length while skipping the ones that would have had some excitement.

LOL My one quibble: Start reading A Place of Execution: It gives you the feeling of being there. The owner of the manor house, who functions as ‘Lord of the Manor’, controls the land on which Scardale residents farm and raise livestock.

This was my first Val Oc book and after this plan to read more. Superbly written, I cannot recommend ‘A Place of Execution’ enough. The usual protocol ensues but there comes a dramatic turn of events many years later. He tossed the book my way and in no time, I was hooked.
